Biography
|
For over thirty five years, grateful clients in the broadcast, commercial and corporate sectors, have put their money where Voiceover Man's mouth is!
From vocal characterisation for radio and TV commercials, PS2 and X Box Games and cartoon animation, through blue chip corporate presentation to network documentary narration, Prime Time Bafta award winning TV Entertainment shows, Feature film ADR and station imaging for both Radio and TV. Voiceover Man is where it's at.
While completing his honours degree in Psychology (4 bloody grinding years), Voiceover man began his career at the BBC where, after lying about how old he was, holds the unique distinction of being the youngest ever TV news presenter in the history of the corporation - at the tender age of 17. He remembers wearing his school shorts for the first newscast - though no one believes him since it was a medium close up. He spent some 4 years as a radio reporter and sub editor at BBC Northern Ireland. In 1982 he moved to BBC Radio 2 in London and hasn't looked back - except once in 1987, when he was chased by an irate listener up Portland Place.

Ahh Yes... Soho Square. Home Sweet Home!
He has presented his own entertainment series "Peter Dickson's Nightcap" for BBC Radio 2 (produced, among others, by the late Harry Thompson, Andy Aliffe, Mark Robson and Jon Magnusson) which, amazingly, ran for 4 years. He has worked with Kenneth Williams, Babs Windsor, Peter Ustinov, Tommy Trinder, Ernie Wise and Roy Hudd on series for BBC Radio. Adrian Juste, Simon Mayo, Bruno Brookes and Simon Bates on Radio 1. Deputised for Gloria Hunniford, and John Dunn on Radio 2 and presented for Radio 1's "Newsbeat". He has fronted programmes for the BBC's World Service and has been the guest reader on Radio 4's Morning Story. He is now working on a cure for prostate cancer. What a guy!

He was the main promotions voice for BBC 1 TV for 6 years, and created, wrote and performed many of the household name characters for Steve Wright's groundbreaking afternoon and morning award winning shows on BBC Radio 1 during the 80's and early 90's. He still maintains close links with Radio One - making sporadic appearances on Chris Moyles' Breakfast Show and Scott Mills at Drivetime. In 2006 he narrated the Radio 1 Christmas Pantomime and was THE BIG VOICE on Scott Mills New Years Eve House Party. His was the last voice to be heard on BBC Radio 1 in 2006. Not much of a claim we know...but still.
In 1989, he launched the immensely successful Melody Radio (now Magic 105.4) in London, where he presented the breakfast show for 4 years. He continues to present occasional music and entertainment shows for BBC Radio 2 and has contributed to two series of "Quote Unquote" for BBC Radio 4. In 1984 He appeared at the London Palladium alongside Jim Davidson in a special charity fundraiser for the victims of the Zebrugge disaster. He has also worked with Kenneth Brannagh on the Billy series for BBC TV.

When he's not on the telly, Voiceover Man can often be found hanging out at The Bar Italia
Various "on screen" character roles followed on "Steve Wright People's Show" Series 1 & 2 for BBC 1 TV. It was never recommissioned. No one was that surprised.
Dennis Potter, the acclaimed TV playwright and a fan of Voiceover Man's Radio shows offered him, more out of pity than anything else, some small cameo roles in several of his controversial and award winning TV Dramas.

More Television beckoned in 1994, when the late Harry Thompson cast him for various parts in the award winning "Harry Enfield and Chums", and Voiceover Man was Patrick Kielty's first choice for the live voice work on Channel 4's ten part series "Last Chance Lottery - Live".

Jim Moir (aka Vic Reeves) and Bob Mortimer (aka Bob Mortimer) teamed up with him and the late Patrick Allen (aka Patrick Allen)on all six episodes of "The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer" for BBC2. The DVD is now available in all good record shops. The series also starred a young Matt Lucas (off of Little Britain) and Uncle Peter (off of the wrong end of the Wrenglands Estate in Notts). It was produced by a young Charlie Higson
(AKA Swiss Tony) who went on to enjoy fame as Ralph off of Ted and Ralph and who is now a successful children's author aka Charlie Higson.
He has also contributed to 11 series of the award winning BBC 1 tv panel game "They Think It's All Over" presented by Nick Hancock.
The team from they think It's All Over
The UK and global entertainment legend that is: His Excellency Lord Bruce Forsyth DSO and Bar of Edmonton asked Voiceover Man to voice the famous "Come on Down's" and prize descriptions for 7 series of ITV's massive game show hit, "Bruce's Price is Right", on air since 1995. They even briefly shared a dressing room. Ask him about the Complan, Sanatogen and the royal jelly, next time you see him. Best not to ask about how Voiceover Man once shared a slice of Edam cheese and some Medjool dates in a Leeds hotel room in 1995. Don't ask! Believe me it's not worth it.
ITV made sure he was on board for the 25 part series of "Family Fortunes" starring Les Dennis, for "Late Night with Jerry Springer" for both ITV and Channel 5 in the UK, for "Soapstar Superstar" 2006 & 2007 and for the ITV quiz show "It's not the Answer" hosted by ex Eastender's star Nadia Sawalla.
The TV Light Entertainment Behemoth THE X FACTOR has been a highlight in Voiceover Man's calendar since 2003. His legendary voice heralds the start of each show and has introduced international world class acts from Beyonce to Sir Paul McCartney to George Michael and The Black Eyed Peas. He was voted as having one of the top 3 iconic voices in the UK in 2009.
Voiceover Man was also the voice of choice for producers Georgie Hurford Jones and James Sunderland and director Chris Power on Ant and Dec's Gameshow Marathon in 2005 - a series which reignited the fortunes of the game show genre in the UK. The series was recommissioned with Voiceover Man and Vernon Kay as host, in 2007.
In 2008 and 2009 Voiceover Man was called into the ADR suite to rescue four episodes of Ashes to Ashes - starring Phillip Glennister - for the BBC and Harley Street - for ITV1 - duties he was glad to perform for his usual fee. He has also starred in the BBC2 Series "Teethgrinder" and the BBC 1 Series "HEDZ" - which won two BAFTA Awards in 2008.
In 2009 His imposing vocal presence heralded the start of Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow for BBC 1 and the 8 part "Chris Moyles' Quiz Night" on Channel 4. A second series in in the pipeline.
He provided his unique commentary on 11 episodes of "Guinness World records Smashed" on Sky 1 with his pals Steve Jones and Konnie Huq. He made a guest appearance with his pal Dermot O'Leary of O'Learyshire on Never Mind the Buzzcocks on BBC2.
He was the voice of Sport Relief 2010 - across all media. He is the voice of the Will Leahy Show on RTE2 and is the station voice of 4FM in Ireland.
In 2010, following a national poll, he was declared as having one of the top 3 iconic voices of the decade. He also won the quote of the year 2009 in a poll conducted by Heat magazine for "It's time to face the music".

Live Events

In 2005, he Co presented the Children's Film and TV BAFTA Awards with Emma Forbes, in the grand ballroom at London's Hilton Hotel and discraced himself afterwards by drinking too much wine and vomitating into a cutsie Mulberry leather hat box belonging to the babe-a-licious Elle McPherson. In 2006 he co hosted the Annual Women in Technology Awards With the lovely Kate Silverton off of Breakfast Telly, at New Billingsgate London, where thankfully he exercised a great deal more self restraint. He has also introduced the Marketing Society's 50th Anniversary Gala Dinner at Evolution, The Scottish Grocer Awards, The National Television Awards at the O2 Arena, The Globe Travel Awards at the Grosvenor House, the Carphone Warehouse Conference, the ITV Autumn Gala at Camden's Roundhouse, Visit London Awards at The Royal Albert hall, The Jerry Herman / Angela Landsbury Cruisaid Benefit concert at the London Palladium, The RICS Awards, The TUI Awards, The Railway Ball, The Railway Business Awards, The TV Choice and TV Quick Awards at The Grosvenor House, the Nurse of the year awards at The Royal Opera House, The BUPA conference, The Pizza Express Awards at The Round House, The Scottish Science Awards, Creditsafe Christmas Event, The Marketing Society Awards and The GCAP Sales awards at Gleneagles in 2008.
He was booked to host the L'Oreal Hairdresser of the year awards. Luckily, they read this page and have now cancelled. As have the Forensic Cleaners. Having not seen this - The Football League asked him to host their Awards Dinner at The Hilton London as have HBOS who have booked him for their beanfest with Lord Bruce Forsyth at the Natural History Museum. The Lawyer of the year awards organisers are really taking their life in their hands. Life is a bitter mistress.
In July 2007, Voiceover Man won the best guest week on The Scott Mills Show on BBC Radio 1 (He has still not received his prize), and in 2008 he discraced himself on the same show during an outside broadcast from Barry Island - when he uttered the words "Damp Gussets" before the watershed.

Voiceover Man is also the In Flight voice of Emirates - One of the world's leading Airlines apparently, where he can often be heard shouting about Mont Blanc pens, man size Toblerone, petticoat tail shortbread, Edinburgh rock and other duty free tat. He has also acted as MC at the company's annual beanfest - what Joy! Enshallah! Allah Akbar! How do you land this ruddy thing again?
In 2006 - Voiceover Man was picked from a field of 86 total no hopers, to succeed the late great "jut jawed" Patrick Allen as the voice of Yoof entertainment channel - E4. He's not worthy to even lick the great man's boots but it hasn't stopped him having a go. He's in for a right Poltergeisting this Christmas. In this role he has starred in 4 short films for the channel. He was also the voice of "The Sun" - on all of that title's radio and TV campaigns in England for a short while in 2007. We love it! Too bloody right we do.
In 2007 he signed a 12 month contract to succeed the great English eccentric thespian Brian Blessed as the voice of The Christian O'Connell Breakfast Show on Virgin Radio UK - which has been renewed for another year. They are such a bunch of talentless wastrels. Blessed is reportedly livid - and rightly so. He was last heard howling from his base camp on the north face of Everest, in a force 10 gale. Walt Disney Pictures chose Voiceover Man to voice all the TV spots in the UK promoting their new animated adventure feature - "Up", "BOLT", "G-Force" and "Confessions of a Shopaholic". He has also featured on TV commercials for 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.

Voiceover Man often pretends he has written for the award winning BBC 2 comedy series "The Fast Show" starring Paul Whitehouse, Mark Williams, Simon Day, Caroline Aherne, Arabella Weir, John Thompson and Charlie Higson and "Play Your Cards Right" for ITV, starring His Royal Highness Lord Sir Bruce Forsyth OBE KSO and Bar. He swears it's true, though no one believes him.
His other TV credits include, "Never Mind The Buzzcocks" - including the 1999 Christmas CD and book. Acting roles in "Holby City", "Noel's House Party" and "Live and Kicking" for BBC 1, "The 10%'ers" and "The Unknown Soldier" for Carlton TV, Griff Rees-Jones' "Crystal Balls" for BBC 1, "Tales from Fear" for Cartoon Network, "Sing It Your Way" for ITV with Denise Van Outen and Ian Wright, and ITV's "Year of Promise" with Carol Vorderman. Jerry Springer also made sure Voiceover Man was "up front and full on", on his massive Friday Night show for the ITV network.

He has completed other major documentary series and one off's for National Geographic, ABC News, BBC Television, The History Channel, Outline Productions, Wall to Wall, Café Productions, North One, Flat Earth Films, and British Movietone.
